Pickerings / Puckerings of Flamborough

A Thomas Pickering was living in Bempton in 1510 and was buried there in 1563.  This is the only documentary evidence I have found to date that connects the Puckerings of Flamborough to the de Brus family (see Origins), who held Bempton and many villages that surround Flamborough to the east, but not Flamborough itself, which was held by the Constables.

The first ten generations of this tree are made up of Pickerings for which documentary evidence exists of their presence in Pickering until the end of the 13th century and thereafter in Holderness until they settled in Flamborough area towards the end of the 15th century.  However, proof of their belonging to the same family or of the relationship between the siblings has not always been found.  Firm documentary evidence exists from the 10th generation onwards, but before that point this tree should be considered a draft.

Assheton arms

It is not known why the family adopted the alternative spelling of their surname.  It is possible that the very staid Sir John Puckering wished to distinguish himself at the court of Queen Elizabeth from Sir William Pickering, who was an altogether more flamboyant figure (see Pickerings of Oswaldkirk).
