The data on which this tree is based derives to a large extent on the research contained in The Pickerings of Barlby, York and Wetherby, compiled by P. Spencer Umfreville Pickering and published in 1916. It is an admirable work, based on the painstaking search of parish registers, official records, family documents and contemporary memories. Its main aim seems to be the author’s wish to debunk his grandfather’s work, “a small manuscript volume entitled Liber Prosapiae, compiled by Edward Rowland Pickering”, which claims that his branch can be traced back to the Pickerings who settled in Westmorland in the 13th century. Although P.S.U. Pickering was able to set the record straight, his work was later (dis)used by “Count” John C. Pickering, to make even wilder ancestral claims than E.R. Pickering. In his work entitled The Pickerings, Yorkshire and Worcester, also the Pickerings, Lord Mayors, Sheriffs and Aldermen of York, the “count” not only claims to belong to the Barlby family (he belongs to the Pickerings of Kirkby Wharfe), but also sets out his descent from the Saxon kings of England and the kings of Ireland and Scotland, and just stops short of naming as his ancestor Jesus Christ himself! It is a pity that any original and perhaps valid research contained in the work, such as the relationship by marriage of the Worcestershire Pickerings to William Shakespeare, is totally discredited by the author’s more preposterous claims.

Circumstantial evidence suggests that the Barlby Pickerings are an offshoot of the Oswaldkirk branch. Thomas Barton in his History and Antiquities of Hemingbrough states that the rectors of Hemingbrough church, the parish to which Barlby belonged until 1866, were persons of distinction, the living being one of the ecclesiastical prizes of the north. Between 1409 and 1412 the rectorship was in the hands of Richard Pickering, obviously a man of means, as he financed the glazing of the great rose window at the east end of Durham cathedral at cost of 14l. His name and his good deed are recorded in the Liber Vitae of Durham and his coat of arms was depicted twice in the stained-glass windows of Hemingbrough church: once showing the (Oswaldkirk Pickering’s) “gules a chevron or between three fleurs-de-lis argent” alone, and the other with Babthorpe in chief and Waterton in base impaling the Pickering arms, a crescent for difference. The latter arms were probably those of Robert Babthorpe, a member of Hemingbrough parish’s ruling family, who married a Pickering in the middle of the 15th century. (The stained-glass windows, described in the visitation of Yorkshire of 1584, survived the Reformation but were destroyed at a later date, possibly during the Civil War, when the church organ is said to have suffered the same fate.)

The Babthorpes’ fortunes began to decline at the time of the Reformation. Though initially accepting Henry VIII’s reforms to the church, they never completely came to terms with them and, over the ensuing generations, gradually reverted to the old, Catholic faith. By the time Sir William inherited the family estate in 1618 it was a shadow of its former self: his parents’ refusal to conform had resulted in two-thirds of the rents being lost in fines and punishments, and the sale of the houses and lands had already begun. By the mid 1600s the remaining members of the family had moved to the continent, where they could practise their faith without fear of reprisal. They all entered ecclesiastical establishments which meant that by the early 1700s the line had ceased to exist. In the meantime their entire estate in the parish of Hemingbrough had been sold, with a large proportion of the holdings situated in and around Barlby going to the Pickerings.

A further indication of the Barlby Pickerings’ link to those of Oswaldkirk is provided by John Pickering the elder and his son John Pickering the younger appearing as witnesses in 1609 to a feoffment relating to properties in Pennythorpe, Laxton, Kilpin, Skelton and Howden (see 2nd and 3rd Generations below). The owner of these properties were members of the Fairfax family, into which the first Sir William Pickering of Oswaldkirk had married in c1510. Furthermore, the Pickerings of Threekingham were holding lands in the same area during the same period, and Anthony Pickering of the Pickerings of Holderness married Grace Harforth of Howden in 1606, though he was living in Hedon at the time, while John Pickering of Laxton married Margaret Harforth of Howden in 1691 (see 5th Generation below). Both the Threekingham and Holderness families are offshoots of the Pickerings of Oswaldkirk and the Harforth brides from Howden suggest that they still maintained a connection.

A more tenous link is provided by the settlement in 1363 by William de Aton of the manor of Barlby to Robert Bruys and others on trust. Robert de Brus was probably a relative (either an uncle or cousin) of Sir William de Brus of Pickering. The Bruses of Pickering adopted the name of their town of origin once they moved away from Pickering and “maintained a clear policy of ensuring that younger sons remained subordinate to the senior line, supporting it as tenants, clerics or administrators, in order to preserve the unity and power of the lordship” (see Origins). This might explain the presence of Pickerings in the Barlby area.
