The only indication of the origins of this family is found on the 1841 census. The first David appears as living with his wife and four of his seven children in Sculcoates. The column “Whether Born in same County” is marked “N” for David and “Y” for the rest of the family, but we know he was born in England as the the column “Whether Born in Scotland, Ireland or Foreign Parts” is blank. From David’s age at death we can deduce that he was born in approximately 1780.

A search of the Church of England records does not reveal a David born around that year outside Yorkshire, but his first son, *George, was baptised a non-conformist in 1809, so it is likely that David’s birth is contained in a non-conformist register which is not on line. He seems to have been relaxed as far as faith was concerned: George was baptised for a second time in the Anglican faith in 1819, along with his brother William; Hannah, David and Ann were received in the Anglican faith as a “job lot” in 1818; they were followed by John and Robert in 1820 and 1837 respectively; but Frances, who was born in 1823, was baptised a non-conformist in 1837!

Only a DNA connection with another Pickering family of known origins will provide a clue as where David was born. The name Pickering “was already to be found in most parts of England by about 1400” (see Origins), so the scope is vast!

*George became a pavior like his father and his younger brothers and was still in the trade when he married in 1830. However, by the time his first child was baptised in 1837 he had become a clockmaker. Unlikely as this seems, there are many correlations that back this up, e.g. year of birth, name of wife, sister Hannah a witness at his wedding, etc.
