A Richard de Pykering was recorded in the Richmond archdeaconry registers as a cleric in Middleham in 1399. Middleham castle was built at the gateway to Wensleydale and Coverdale, raising the possibility that it was Richard who introduced the name Pickering to Coverdale but, as an unmarried cleric, it could only have been other members of his family who perpetuated it. Perhaps it was also one of these early settlers who was granted a coat of arms which bear a distinct resemblance to those of the Pickerings of Oswaldkirk, although they share a crest with the Pickerings of Killington.
The Pickerings lived in the villages and hamlets scattered along both sides of the River Cover which gave its name to Coverdale, their life events taking place in the church at Coverham and also later in the chapels of ease at Horsehouse and Carlton. The earliest documentary evidence of a Pickering resident in Coverdale is provided by the will of William Topham of West Scrafton, of which Richard Pykeryng was a witness in 1541. A William Pickering died in Little (later East) Scrafton in 1573 leaving no will, which suggests that his death occurred at an unexpectedly young age. His widow Jenet was appointed his administrator and an inventory of his goods and chattels was drawn up. The name appears again in 1587 in the will of Christopher Harrison of Melmerby, in which he is found to be owing money to an Anne Pickeringe.
I have assumed Richard was the husband of Ann and that William and Janet were their son and daughter-in-law, making them the founding members of the Pickerings of Coverdale. East and West Scrafton lie on the eastern bank of the river Cover, a little over two kilometres apart, and Melmerby lies on the western bank opposite East Scrafton at a distance of approximately one and a half kilometres via the footpath that includes St. Simon’s bridge. All three places were sparsely populated hamlets at the time, most of the population living in isolated farmhouses. But the inhabitants of Coverdale would have been acquainted, having the opportunity to meet at the local markets and at Sunday worship in the church at Coverham.
The Coverham parish registers began around 1600 but, apart from a handful of bishop’s transcripts, all the baptism, marriage and burial records up to 1707 are missing, and those of the early 1700s are often hardly legible. This means that the descent of the founding two couples is based on the very limited sources that still exist, circumstantial evidence and educated guesswork. However, many wills, administrations and inventories have survived, including some in the name of Pickering and others where the name is mentioned. They are held at the West Yorkshire Archive and Ian Spensley has painstakingly transcribed these precious documents and posted on his Yorkshire Dales History site. His work has proved invaluable in piecing together the family I call Pickerings of Coverdale.
By the late 1770s the name Pickering had died out in Coverdale, its bearers having moved to the nearby parishes of Middleham and Aysgarth and further afield. In the meantime Quakerism had arrived in the Yorkshire Dales and was already established both in Coverdale and Wensleydale by the time Richard of the 6th generation was born in c1665. He embraced their new form of Protestantism and moved from East Scrafton in Coverdale to Low Gill in Wensleydale, where his first daughter Mary was baptised a Quaker in 1686 and buried three years later in the Quaker burying place at Carperby. It is thanks to Richard that the Coverdale Pickering family survives to this day.
