The Pickerings who appeared in North Ferriby and moved to Kirk Ella during the 1500s are difficult to place. Some were born before the parish registers started, and the fact that parents were not mentioned in the early records of either of these parishes only adds to the difficulty. The first two generations of this family are therefore based on circumstantial evidence; there is no documentary evidence that the first Thomas and his supposed brother belonged to the same family. However, the recurring names of Thomas, Robert, Richard and Frances point to a connection with the Pickerings Oswaldkirk, who held land in the area. Furthermore, John Pickering who died in Anlaby in 1599 left a will, as did his widow Isabel. By the the time of her death in 1610 she had moved to Beverley and was wealthy enough to leave money, goods and the lease of her house to her sisters and her sister’s children, while her servants, the vicar of St. Mary’s and the poor of the parish received money. Her surviving son Christopher had presumably already received her house in Kirk Ella.
