Gell

The Gell and Pickering families come together through the marriage of Edward Gell (1790-1819) to Elizabeth Pickering (1788-1875) in Hedon in 1809. Their fourth child Edward was to become a well-known architect in Australia, designing the Roman Catholic cathedral and the marble hall in St. Stanislaus College (now the Slattery Museum) in Bathurst, and also St. Patrick’s Roman Catholic church and St. Peter’s Anglican church in nearby Rockley, both in New South Wales.

Edward’s sister Frances married James, the brother of William Bernard Ullathorne who went on to become the first Roman Catholic Bishop of Birmingham.
