Thomas Pickering was a Protestant, living in the hamlet of Busby in the parish of Stokesley, and Dorothy Neesham was a Catholic from Hutton Magna, when their banns were published in 1767. It can only be assumed that someone objected to the clash of faiths as no marriage record has been found. Did the non-conformist church at Crathorne, which agreed to baptise their four sons, perhaps turn a blind eye to their marital situation? Until new information comes to light I am calling this family after the parish in which Thomas lived at the time of the couple’s banns.
