In c1350 the individual plots in the area of Chapel Lane and Bishop Lane occupied the land on both sides of Hull Street (later High Street). By the mid 1500s, when Luke and Henry Thurscross owned property in Bishop Lane Staithe (E), the plots had been divided into two parts split by High Street. In 1611 the Thurscrosses sold 10 messuages to John Pickering, and in 1629 John left his dwelling house to his two younger sons. In his will the house is described as made up of two parts, each having access to a staithe. It probably occupied plots 18 and 19 on the eastern side of High Street, straddling Bishop Lane Staithe, the two parts being linked by an arch on the river side.
