James Pickering is estimated to have been born in about 1800. He was a bricklayer, but no further information is available as his children were baptised Methodists in 1837, after his death. This was probably at the instigation of their mother, and it is possible that they had already been baptised in the Anglican faith, but no records have been found to back this up. The only exception is the fifth child, Hannah Maria, who was initially baptised an Anglican in Liverpool, and later a Methodist in Hull. As her siblings were all born in Hull, perhaps the family had moved to Liverpool just before her birth in 1835, with the intention of emigrating to one of the colonies, but her father died before they could board a ship, and her mother took her and her siblings back to Hull.

Only a DNA test will shed some light on the origins of this family.
